This article is for School Leadership and Safeguarding Contacts.
This article recommends steps to safeguard students’ online wellbeing and internet use before pausing Monitor.
What happens when you pause Monitor?
When you schedule to turn off or pause Monitor, it cannot:
- Capture activities on students’ devices.
- Send captures back to Monitor for assessment by our Moderation Team.
- Trigger email alerts or calls, including Level 5 events.
What should you do before pausing Monitor?
Consult local laws and regulations
Before adding a schedule to turn off Monitor, consult local laws and regulations on children’s online safety. These laws and regulations may require you to only turn on internet safety tools–like Monitor–during school hours or at all times, including non-school days such as holidays and term breaks.
Check when high-risk events occur
Monitor has shown that Level 3 events or higher spike at certain hours. Before pausing Monitor, check your school’s Monitor Reports and Events to find out when students are likely to engage in risky behaviours online or access unsafe content.
Engage your stakeholders
Discuss with parents, guardians, and the school community ways to address online safety issues that may occur while students’ devices are not actively monitored. You can:
- Facilitate learning sessions on cyberbullying, healthy tech boundaries, social media trends and setting up parental controls.
- Educate parents and guardians on how parental control tools can help them manage their child’s school-issued device at home and safeguard their child’s online wellbeing.
- Inform staff, students, parents and guardians about how Monitor protects your students online and whether you plan to turn it on or off during holidays and school breaks.
Check if Monitor is working on all school devices
Ensure Monitor is working when it’s scheduled to turn on and actively monitor users’ devices. Your IT Contact can help you check for this issue on the dashboard, troubleshoot inactive devices, or update Monitor to the latest version.
