Monitor must be configured on users’ macOS devices to send data back to the Monitor portal. Due to current Apple restrictions on granting permissions remotely, you must log in to each device as an Administrator and manually set the Accessibility, Input Monitoring and Screen Recording permissions.
Important
The configuration steps in this article may differ slightly across macOS versions. Always consult Apple's documentation for the macOS versions you’re working with.
Before you begin
- You must be an IT Contact in Monitor.
- Ensure you have Administrator access to each macOS device.
- Complete the Monitor client installation on your macOS device.
- Copy your Organization ID based on your Monitor version:
- New version: Go to Settings > Configuration and select the Config button for your organisation. On the Config panel, select the Copy icon (clipboard) to the right of the Organization ID field.
- Legacy version: Go to Monitor > License Information and copy your Organisation ID. Select the Copy icon (paper) next to your Organization ID.
The ID format looks like:
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000
Step 1: Enter your MMS organisation ID and region
- Run the configuration command on the Terminal app.
sudo "/Library/Application Support/Visigo/configure.sh" install ORGANISATION\_ID UNCL
- Replace "ORGANISATION\_ID" with your school’s Monitor Organisation ID.
Step 2: Set the Privacy & Security permissions
Warning
If you installed Monitor manually and the VisigoAgent pop-up requesting permission appears, do not select Deny. Always consult the documentation for your device’s macOS version.
- Open the device’s System Settings (or System Preferences for older macOS versions) and select Privacy & Security on the left menu.
- Ensure VisigoAgent is turned on for:
- Accessibility
- Input Monitoring
- Screen & System Audio Recording.
- Close System Settings.
Tip
- If VisigoAgent doesn’t appear on the right pane, select the plus icon at the bottom left, and find VisigoAgent in the device.
- If prompted, enter your device’s Administrator password.
- Older macOS versions may ask for permissions multiple times. You can dismiss these requests by restarting System Settings.
- You may need to reopen VisigoAgent to ensure the Privacy & Security settings are working.
Step 3: Check that Monitor is running
- Verify that Monitor is running by examining the log file on the target device. It is located on this path:
/var/log/visigo/Visigo.log
- If you are logged in to the device as an administrator, you can monitor the log file by running this command in the Terminal:
/var/log/visigo/Visigo.log
- Type any text into any application and press Enter or Return. The log file should report that it is communicating with Monitor.
Note
If your device is running macOS Big Sur or later, Monitor should start working immediately. For earlier versions like macOS Catalina, you may need to restart the device.
